WHITEWATER RAFTING AND EPIC STORYTELLING

Years ago, I wasn’t a storyteller. I was a rafting guide.

Instead of telling stories with music, I rode whitewater rivers.

If the story is the river, then the music is the rapids and words are your tossing boat. Coming at you in the surge ahead, the rocks are events to be described or embodied, and once you’re past them, there’s no time to look back. Your paddles are your syntax, basically, madly splashing you this way and that, keeping you straight in the current of music.

Whether it’s a river or a performance tale, the ride is fun and overwhelming.

I’m offering two pubic shows for adults this coming January 2020. Fittingly for winter, both howl of Viking life. Each is a full evening’s entertainment with music on Celtic harp and 12-string guitars.

Beowulf: The Only One is January 12 at Grendel’s Den in Cambridge, MA.

Odin and Thor Battle the Frost Giants is January 17 at Zinger’s in Milford, NH.

Tickets are on sale now.

Standup Comedians, Musicians, and…Odds Bodkin storytelling?

Zinger’s in Milford, NH usually hosts stand-up comedians and music acts, but on January 17th, 2020, at 7 pm Odds Bodkin will show up to tell ODIN AND THOR BATTLE THE FROST GIANTS, an adult storytelling show with live acoustic accompaniments. He’ll use Celtic harp and 12-string guitars.

Talk about some cognitive dissonance. And yet, not so, because very hip young crowds have been coming to get their minds blown at Odds’ adult shows at Grendel’s Den on Harvard Square for years now. They found the secret ticket to the true intelligentsia. Now you can, too.

If you’re a hard-boiled comedy fan who can’t find anything to laugh at anymore, then come to this show. Odds Bodkin doesn’t care if you laugh.

He’s there to make you dream.

ODIN AND THOR BATTLE THE FROST GIANTS Sunday Jan. 14 at Grendel’s Den in Cambridge MA

Adult storytelling this Sunday night!

Odds Bodkin returns to Grendel’s Den in Cambridge, MA to perform ODIN AND THOR BATTLE THE FROST GIANTS: VIKING MYTHS OF ADVENTURE on Sunday night, January 14th at 5:30 p.m., with seating commencing at 5:00 p.m.

Eat and drink adult beverages like a Viking, then hear two epic Viking myths wrapped in little-known lore (Thursday is Thor’s Day; Wednesday is Wotan’s Day). First, a tale of magic and illusion as Thor and Loki journey to the city of their enemies, the Frost Giants. Meet Thor, big, strong, slightly dim and lovable, along with Loki, everything Thor is not. You’ll hear full characterizations for these mythic characters, along with peasants and immense giants. And of course, a full score on 12-string guitar. Then, the long tale of Odin’s search for the blood of his best friend who’s been murdered, his blood brewed into a wisdom-bestowing elixir. Hear another 12-string, along with more music and voices for dwarves, a dangerous, lonely giantess, and Odin himself.

Plus little-known Viking lore explained as Odds plays the Celtic harp. Last year, this show sold out, so grab your tickets now! Only a few remain!

Adventure, humor and great acoustic music.

$15 table seating, $10 at the bar. Get tickets here.

BEOWULF: THE ONLY ONE Audio Thanksgiving Day Release

Beowulf: The Only One
A New Bardic Telling with 12-String Guitar

Odds Bodkin’s new 65-minute bardic telling of the oldest story in the English language will be available at https://www.oddsbodkin.net/shop/ on Thanksgiving Day. Employing a cinema-like score on 12-string guitar, human characters and monstrous voices, the audio tells a tale of gratitude and simple courage in the face of ancient evils.

Beowulf: The Only One is gruesome in places and filled with vivid details of old Viking life. Unlike recent Hollywood versions of the tale, the audio closely follows the original poem’s story, from the monster Grendel’s first attacks on Hrothgar’s mead hall to Beowulf’s battle with the Fire Dragon fifty years later.

The story includes frank violence. Not recommended for listeners under 12.

This recording joins Bodkin’s collection of epic tales for older children, teens and adults that includes The Odyssey, David and Goliath, The Hidden Grail and The Myth of Hercules, all available as mp3 audios at www.oddsbodkin.net.

The download will be available for $14.95 using PayPal.
