A DEEPLY FRIGHTENING MYTH OF SURVIVAL

In the sparse life of the ancient Eskimos, a daughter who will not marry is a death sentence.

Sedna is just such a girl. No suitor quite suits her, not even when a mysterious stranger pulls up his kayak onto the pebbly beach and brags of his staggering wealth.

Sedna’s angry, aging father insists she go with the man to become his wife. With no choice in the matter, she slides down into his kayak.

As events unfold, both father and daughter end up in a situation that is beyond horror, beyond betrayal.

A dark, elemental tale from the traditional Inuit of the Arctic Circle, Sedna the Ocean Mother is possibly the scariest, most unsettling story Odds Bodkin tells. Especially for women. It is not cultural appropriation. It is cultural reverence.

This tale is performed with 12-string guitar and a few character voices, plus vocal effects of sea birds, gales and frantic paddling.

To benefit the New Hampshire Telephone Museum, which is a must-see on its own, Odds Bodkin’s Heartpounders II tales are for an adult audience only. Please do not bring children. Original acoustic music–much of it created live, on Celtic harp, 6-string guitar, and 12-string guitars–accompanies the stories.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? SPOOKY TALES FOR HALLOWEEN in WARNER, NH this Saturday

What happens when a waltzing girl begins to disappear before all the dancers’ eyes? Flickering in and out of existence? Does it have to do with the tall stranger who’s shown up at the dance, the one who declines to remove his gloves? The one whose horse stands outside with its hot hooves sinking through the steaming snow?

What happens when a banshee appears in a train’s smoke and chases another train? One filled with mothers, babies, cowboys and gold miners? On a day when the trestle up ahead across the Colorado River might be washed out?

And how much help does a naughty little boy who’s been cursed by a witch never to grow need to find a mysterious singing apple? Especially when it’s guarded by another witch who commands an army of horsemen?

Find out all this and more this coming Saturday afternoon at Warner Town Hall in Warner, NH at storyteller Odds Bodkin’s Halloween show, FUN SPOOKY TALES FOR YOUNG FAMILIES. Music on guitars and Celtic harp, fun character voices and wild sound effects bring these stories to life.

FUN SPOOKY TALES at WARNER TOWN HALL in NH October 28th

If “Imagination is more important than knowledge” as Einstein said, then pulling children from screens and urging them to use this natural human gift is a key parenting tool these days. Spoken word storytelling, especially with live music, hyper-stimulates kids’ minds, urging them to imagine. This builds neural networks that mature into creativity as they grow up.

With all that said, these are fun stories, too. Spooky, but child-manageable. The Banshee Train, The Girl Who Danced with the Devil and The Little Shepherd are the stories in this one-hour show. Music on 6-string guitar, 12-string and Celtic harp add to the enchantment.

This coming Saturday, October 28th at 3 p.m. I’ll be performing Fun Spooky Tales for Young Families. The show is sponsored by Schoodacs of Warner. Grab a great coffee or tea there and then step next door to the Town Hall!

Tickets are $10. Hope to see you there!

DARK TALES OF THE SUPERNATURAL public performance Oct. 29

I don’t tell them often, these three stories. They’re just too unsettling. Still, for Halloween? The Storm Breeder, a New England ghost story, is about an angry man who goes up against Nature and pays an eternal price. The Panther Boys from China is a lycanthropy tale (think werewolves) that pits enchanted sons against their own father. Treasure Trove from Russia is like a wild Twilight Zone story where a greedy fool dons the skin of the Devil to scare an old man into giving up some gold. He regrets that.

Or, if there are too many young kids in the crowd, I’ll go with less graphic tales. I’ll just have to wait and see. DARK TALES OF THE SUPERNATURAL is coming Saturday, October 29th at 5:00 p.m. to the Town Hall in Warner, New Hampshire.

The stories are told with music on 12-string guitars and alto recorder. Lots of voices. Lots of really wild vocal effects, too.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Hope you can make it!
