The Wily African Messenger

The people say that Mamadi cannot tell a lie. The Chief doesn’t believe it, and so sends Mamadi to deliver a message to another village. The Chief knows the message is a lie and can hardly wait to catch Mamadi telling it. But clever as he is, the Chief is in for a big surprise.

Told with African thumb piano and character voices, this clever tale captures the whimsy of language, and how almost anything can be made true with words, even when it isn’t. It comes from the Soninke people, founders of the Ghana Empire that flourished between 750 and 1240 A.D. in West Africa.
